Range Statement

This section specifies work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included. Waste management industry procedures must include at least three of the following:

developing environmental management strategies

developing waste management plans

educating the public on waste and lean management techniques

identifying waste contamination and unacceptable waste types

identifying and segregating waste types, including:

solid: non-hazardous

liquid: non-hazardous

hazardous: regulated, prescribed, dangerous goods, quarantined, medical and clinical

recoverable resources

licensing related to plant and equipment operation and waste management facilities

selling reusable waste to the public.

Relevant personnel must include at least one of the following:

industry representative

manager

supervisor or team leader.


Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also identify and verbally summarise operational requirements of the waste management industry covering:

identified waste management requirements, including:

compliance requirements, as specified in the range of conditions

industry information, as specified in the range of conditions

identified future career opportunities in the waste management industry based on an assessment of key industry sectors and occupations

identified waste management environmental issues, including methods for using the waste management hierarchy and the importance of waste management in relation to environmental protection.


Knowledge Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of waste

key environmental issues related to waste management including waste minimisation and how the waste management hierarchy is applied

key organisations, occupations and career opportunities in the waste management industry

organisational procedures and regulatory and legal requirements relating to the waste management industry

waste disposal and recovery methods

waste types, as specified in the range of conditions.
